There is something clarifying about winter light. It arrives low and stays low, and there is no hiding from it. Shadows stretch long from the first hour of the morning.

I used to avoid shooting in January. The cold made handling the camera unpleasant, and the grey skies felt like a kind of failure. Now I think I had it backwards.
The flatness is not an absence of light — it is a particular quality of light, one that asks you to find structure in other things: shape, proximity, stillness.
